After watching Despicable me and while reading so many books on Leadership and Self development; a self awareness occured.

Do we in our actions become lazy about making decisions ? We are in knowledge economy one where we not only do things, but need to know what to do. Often times we find ourselves stuck and easiest way seems to be being told what to do. Almost like Minions !!
YEs part of it is also being stupid; it shows up like we are beings of lower mental prowess ( 5 arivu jeevangal). Worse yet we blame others when things go wrong.

How do we un-minionize ?
Awareness is the key; every moment ! Does it mean becoming a man ? Doesnt matter how you want to label it or call it. But yes it is about calling the shots.

Is this easy ?
Bad habits are hard to lose, nevertheless like in meditation where mind wanders and we keep bringing it back, we need to constantly try. It needs patience; it needs interest/passion; it needs expertise of the matter; sincerity & commitnment get there.

Do you feel this ?

For instance, my dad would assign me a to-do list and last item was 'Report Compliance'. Appa I see you smiling ! Another example men asking for deadlines on pending items or saying some task at home is highest priority.
It is not bad, except I now annoy B the exact same way. I ask him to agree upon 'action items' to tackle a decision. I think of him as my team in dealing certain siutations. I "allocate resources" to projects at home :)..It is fun to be a Manager at certain things ;-)..
One implication of this condition which we can term 'post-it-ism' or having a thing for post it notes ! I have a task dairy planner for weekly goals. For daily goals, post its are cool. Sahar, my friend suggested pink for personal and yellow for official. When i leave work, I stick 'tonight to do' non brain consuming mundane work on my office laptop. At home there are things to do and things to buy on separate post it notes each, color coded. I leave notes to B - task notes as he wouls confess :-P..
Ok yeah, I ll agree it is sometimes a post it explosion. It is like pens to me, the more the merrier. But will you agree with me, when I say trashing these notes on 'task completion' is a wonderful experience ? - A little victory in time !Shrividyahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08520929853783981943noreply@blogger.com18tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8036433478105578893.post-29508427442252819202010-08-30T23:05:00.004-05:002010-08-30T23:28:23.855-05:00Digital Image Processing - FA 2010I took this course not with much idea of things done on images, but I am starting to be amused by the course and thoroughly enjoying it, given that it's offered by one of the best professors in my school.
Today's class on 'human vision' was a very good learning experience. Can you believe that our eye has been so carefully designed that emulating just the vision (leaving the higher level processing) has taken so much research? Adding senses to it for Ariifical Intelligence purposes has still a long way to go. Makes me feel who can be a better engineer than god. We have been trying to copy from his design and that's when we realize how much thought has gone into our existence, which we take for granted.

Here are list of little things your eye can do for you
1. The curvature of the lens is adjusted either to be curved to see nearby objects or made flat in order to see far objects.
2. The refractive index is denser than air in order to take in the photons from visible spectrum, instead of reflecting the useful information.
3. The pupil is like an aperture to shut when there is too much light and open when it's dark in order for you to see clearly.
4. The retina is the photosensitive receptor/sensor from where the gathered information is sent to the brain. There is a 5 degree tilt on optical axis to let the lines meet in order for us to focus and let the two lines meet. Fovea has denser collection of photoreceptors for acute vision.
5. The cornea which is the hard transparent layer of eye contributes to power. It also acts like a filter to protect harmful UV rays as they can damage the tissue beneath.

There is so much more than this that the eye does. One of the hardest things to emulate on robots was to catch objects, predicting the future trajectory of ball/object.
It amazes how easily you can identify exactly what you look for, analyze depth in the image.
I am also learning how our vision is relative and even tends to be fooled sometimes, but it is so perfect that 2/3 rd of our brain processes visual inputs and is so vital to our existence.Shrividyahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08520929853783981943noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8036433478105578893.post-50746654798406272672010-01-15T14:16:00.001-06:002010-01-15T14:34:32.393-06:00Some more notes from the elephant and the dragon- C.K.Prahalad says that businesses will gain by supplying to the lowest bottom of the pyramid, the middle class and lower.

- Your shirt or car would have traveled more countries than you did or will ever do. Thanks to the global supply chain and interwoven economies.

- If US were to continue it's dominance, people may have to re-train for jobs, get into nano, green tech sectors, improve infrastructure ( China's is better according some observations), start spending consciously ( Collectively Americans are in nagative savings mode as opposed to 30% odd savings in India and China. They spend more than they earn. Reason - in my view it is abundance of goods and luxuries all around and seamless ways of payments, plastic cards I mean..Cannot blame americans completely if they hoard their garage with goods from China), invest in education ( I was startled to see that American 15 year olds are 15 th or 8 th in their maths and science skills compared to rest of the world. This is not okay given that thye will have people all over the world competing with them unlike their parent's times), invest in reasearch and hence foster creativity and innovation.

- Why is all not reversible ? 'Buy America' is unlikely - Poeple have chosen Toyotas to Ford in past, they may not buy expensive goods from America and choose against low priced walmart made in china goods, they do not care who does the back office work like tax filing or mortgages or insurances - as long as it's done.
Protectionism - Does not work either, Europe suffered as a result with stagnant growth rates due to protectionism. Protecting jobs here would mean missing out on 'low wage' options and hence when the same person who lost job becomes a consumer, will have to pay heavy prices for all his expenses, which leaves less cash in his hands. Americans are net gainers on long run. $1 tn is the gain in 2006 and more in years that followed.

- Meredith even predicts from her observations that China and India will have a share of the Superpower pie in coming years. Indians will throw the government if the growth is not sustained and similarly there might be a public roar if they go without jobs. Hence their governments will make sure that they have a double digit growth.

- Ms.Meredith also talks about challenges both countries face in coming years..Like I already said it's a must read for many of us.Shrividyahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08520929853783981943noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8036433478105578893.post-3958684216225638722010-01-06T15:01:00.007-06:002010-01-07T08:18:01.889-06:00Elephant and Dragon - East meets WestFor me holidays mean resting, relaxing, reading and learning. I recently borrowed an audio book( audio books work best with me these days, given my 10 month old who would tear books to pieces. At our home the digital version of anything is more invincible than paper.) by Robyn Meredith called 'The elephant and the dragon. This was long overdue given that the book came out in 2006. It has been by far a very popular book in "China India Economy" domain.

I have just read 3 chapters amounting to 2 CDs in a set of 8 and loved it completely.
Ms.Meredith is a foreign correspondent for Forbes in China and India. She has managed to paint a realistic ( in my view) picture of what's happening to China and India and what it means to the world. This book is an absolute read for all Asians, Indians and Americans as well.

Since she is a news correspondent, through an audio book, she has taken us to the roads, airports and cities in India and I could also completely visualize her descriptions about Beijing, Shanghai and many other Chinese towns. You can relate the audio book to NPR broadcasts if you ever heard the public broadcasting station at 87.7 FM.

The verbiage excellently captures the actual feelings of post-globalization citizens and benefactors. Interestingly you do not get bogged down by statistics and appreciate what's happening in the East comprehensively and clearly. As a 20 or 30 something you may not have witnessed the reforms that were executed in both the countries ( 1978 - China 1991 - India) and how it changed the way things were done forever.

As a Easterner living in the West, this book led me to imagine the amount of opportunities these countries have in future and to sustain a 8% plus GDP growth given the enormous investments, labor and other resources going into the system.

A part of book tells why it has been easier in China to implement the infrastructure and not in India. Politician Kamalnath has attributed this to the Authoritarian rule in China where things happen at snap of the finger, as opposed to India where the government is decided by the people (Democracy) and thrown out of control if reforms are seen as some threat. Additionally corruption and red tapism slows down the process, making India an Elephant and not a tiger. Atleast it's progressing steadily like a druken man as the book quotes. China is ahead of the two and the Infrastructure is extremely modernand fast growing with newer technologies. A trip to China from India is like a trip to Singapore - a treat to eyes as I can conceive from Meredith's viewpoint.

Also this book is in sync with "my dreams for my country". Better roads, better facilities, better planning, less waiting and an Internet based living. Sitting in 2010 one can imagine more realistically about how India is going to change. A change that is inevitable, given that people are starting to believe in open competition, hence making voting decisions and older generations that are bein g replaced by better salaried young people who are receptive to new ways of living, giving rise to a less conservative and more modern culture.

A farmer's son is no more a farmer, he is sitting in air conditioned rooms with coffee machines and other amenities beside him at work. This boy wants to build a bigger life for his parents, wants to buy a microwave, AC or Flat screen TV, things unimaginable in his father's days.
Or take a girl, who if she was out of college ( provided she even made it to college) looking for jobs before 1990 would have landed on a clerical post, irrespective of her skills, but now is capable of supporting a whole family because she is a part of 2010 India. This has happened within my family.

Elephants and dragons were created when the east opened it's doors to the prosperous westerners. Suddenly East is a fertile land for young, energetic entrepreneurs.

Undoubtedly there is more to happen, newer challenges with free market, but it's all exciting and promising ! !

Shrividyahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08520929853783981943noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8036433478105578893.post-23059036099998629692010-01-05T00:02:00.004-06:002010-01-06T16:27:24.714-06:00A post accident blog - Women and DrivingWhen you have been on roads too frequently and too long, you trust your instincts more than you should. A recent accident is a testimony to the fact. With my then 8 month old baby I tried making it to the signal followed by a sharp turn at the shoulder of a highway hitting the curb.
For a second I lost it all. Dhrithi started crying out of the impact and I was panicking thinking that it's all out of control. It was 2 30 Pm and B had to return from work to assess the damages and take the car to mechanic. The rim was broken and alignment was gone. I stood in the middle of shoulder with Dhrithi crying loud. Since this was my first accident, I didn't know who to call or what it meant to us.

I went BECAR. Like many others I am now a victim of luxury. The car also means much more to me when I have the baby along. For next few weeks, I had to commute by bus with Dhrithi in a baby carrier, with a stroller that I carried into the bus and an umbrella since it rained then. I take pride in being someone who can do adapt to circumstances extraordinarily and fortunately I even did, but an accident had it's impacts.

The cop didn't give me any ticket, my brain did. My self esteem as a decent driver plummeted, My carelessness costed us several thousand dollars., which the insurance had to pay. I am less confortable taking out the car with confidence. Today when I had to drive back from the mechanic, I was scared all through the way for 15 miles.

The bill contained repairs for parts I hardly knew they existed. I have cared less to know about mechanism inside a car just like any other woman. That's a part of being a woman. If you are reading this post and deny this because you drive well and also are familiar with the parts, just pat yourself on the back because you are a rare find according to me.

Women and Driving - Still a paradox.

Good news is that this could have been worse, also I learned my lesson by paying a heavy price.

Shrividyahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08520929853783981943noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8036433478105578893.post-59092025397197759732009-12-10T20:27:00.012-06:002009-12-11T15:24:19.366-06:00Confessions...Clock Ticking..A mommy's blogAs I start to write, I can see the only few minutes left before my little one gets back home. My husband has been sweet enough to give me some ME-time. Dhrithi will be back after a small grocery shopping trip after which she needs me every moment literally.

April 10th 2009 this irreversible change happened. B and me had hardly any idea what it was like having or raising a baby till we had this little angel in our lives. When she was born she was a total stranger to me. Like all new mothers, I was not used to the whole thing. Frankly I did not know that it will be followed by sleepless nights or frequent diaper changes or having a constant background noise at home.Whoosh ! Today this little girl turns 8 months old.

Now - I call her my BOSS. I can sleep when she sleeps and go out with friends when she is not cranky, play when she wants to, sing a poem even if I sound like a donkey and I am yelling inside 'I don't want to sing now'. Not to scare the to-be parents, but it is quite a project to have and bring up a baby. For every waking hour that I spend there are thousand things 'to be done' waiting on the line. A clumsy time-manager and truckloads of chores to run - Perfectly explains me.... Rewind 2 years, I was quite a princess a sleepy, spoiled and a lazy one. Rewind 4 years, I used to throw tantrums at my parent's. Further back, I didn't know how to make coffee or cook rice at age of 17. Now within last few months, I can do literally anything. Arms made of steel, stronger heart and Increased Confidence - this has been a wonderful phase of my life. Yes the kitchen remains unclean sometimes , my books are all over the house, reports to be finished..but I continue to exist ..:-)

You will not have grown up for several years in life and suddenly in one year, you see so many changes all at once. It is one of those significant times, when you surprise yourself.

So what's the incentive. I call it the Magic..Parents can relate to it. When I get back from classes stone tired, one smile on D's face energizes me, lights me up and motivates me. My husband is a great co-parent. He understands Dhrithi's nuances even better sometimes and she is his little baby doll who he dresses up. He totally wants to spoil her. He is a natural unlike me.

I have been everywhere - classes, potluck parties, long phone calls and web conferences, outings, shopping, study groups, temples, cooking exotic snacks, throwing dinner socials, lap sit times for Dhrithi, support group for new mommies, watching parenting shows, doctor visits, project meetings, public libraries, visiting friends..

Looking back it has been wonderful 8 months of my life. As for baby rearing, only good memories stay. I am a standing testimony to the fact.

Thanks to the Balajees !

Shrividyahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08520929853783981943noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8036433478105578893.post-39258424553361031112008-07-16T11:39:00.000-05:002008-07-16T11:40:04.126-05:00ATTITUDEThere once was a woman who woke up one morning, looked in the mirror and noticed she had only three hairs on her head. "Well," she said, "I think I'll braid my hair today." So she did and had a wonderful day. The next day, she woke up, looked in the mirror and saw that she had only two hairs on her head. "Hmm," she said, "I think I'll part my hair down the middle today." So she did and had a fantastic day. The next day, she woke up, looked in the mirror and noticed that she had only one hair on her head. "Well," she said, "today I'm going to wear my hair in a ponytail." So she did and had a really great day. The next day, she woke up, looked in the mirror and noticed that there wasn't a single hair on her head. "YEA!" she exclaimed, "I don't have to fix my hair today!"

This wonderful story reminded me that each day new challenges and adventures come our way. To be really happy, we have to adapt, roll with the changes and embrace the adventure instead of clinging to old ways of living and to the past. This little story makes one point really clear—attitude is everything! When you begin to realize that attitude is a powerful tool, it can change your life for the better, forever.Shrividyahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08520929853783981943noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8036433478105578893.post-14463126340175428842008-06-17T11:31:00.003-05:002008-06-17T11:48:35.662-05:00Dasavatharam
Rating - 3 / 5

Thanks to their excellent performances in past. For stars like Kamal and Rajini, expectations are sky high to meet.

The movie starts in a pompous way with a ardent Vaishnavite punished for not saying "Om Namashivaya", but as the story progresses, you tend to say "Where is it moving now ? ".

It's anytime delightful to see Kamal, the epitome of versatility, assuming multiple roles. He is a consummate artist in every sense. The role he plays and his body language become one. That is his USP. So if one were to evaluate each of these roles independently, the movie is a a decent past time if not great. But what happens when we start making food with a pre-determined fixed 10 ingredients ? We try to fix each of the ingredient somewhere, trying to make sense out of the end-product - the dish, which may or may not be tasty.
Dasavatharam is a similar attempt. An entirely bottom-up approach in a Software Engineer's Language.

I recommend the movie for those who want to kill time. Do not expect more ! I liked Yaradi NEe Mohini better.Shrividyahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08520929853783981943noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8036433478105578893.post-42972847297367557962008-04-09T15:19:00.002-05:002008-04-09T15:22:37.133-05:00Can you choose your religion ?There was a nice thought I came across while watching Oprah's Live web event about what religion to follow.

For ages temples, vedas, churches decide on what should an individual born in this religion should and should not do. What is right and wrong for him/her. What should he/she seek in life. What procedures they should follow in day to day life etc etc.

In modern day, with so much exposure and interaction, we come across people from various cultures and religion. It is time to open up.

You grow up with a religion as a child, but it s not the only way to reach god. It's just one of the ways. When you get exposed to multiple religions and cultures, you can weave your own "mala"/necklace with pearls from different religions. In this case you have created your own set of rules to follow with your own rationale behind them. You do not force anyone and you are being open to gems/ teachings from other religions. Often we find Hindu scholars reading about other dharmas too. The reason I feel is that, being authority in their respective communities, they want to give the community the best of what's there in the world. No wonder Pope visits the mosque or Hindu gurus visit Church.

Isn't this a nice thought to ponder upon ?Shrividyahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08520929853783981943noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8036433478105578893.post-32377969588049160842008-01-17T09:14:00.000-06:002008-01-17T09:15:16.410-06:00The stale systemAll of us will have spent sometime with kids, 3 - 13 years let's say. One thing we would have come across is their "WHYs" to everything we say. They love the word so much that at one point it annoys or baffles their parents tired from work or plainly bored to replying back.

For example as a kid when my mother used to ask me to follow certain rituals or do things certain way, she will try to answer most of my doubts), but when it came to religious activities or some disciplinary activities, probably I was stretching her brain too hard with my 'WHYs'. I was even being called heretic once by a relative. In her generation blind faith and listen to elders was the norm. In my age, one could question, but she/he has to accept certain things without questioning (There were exceptions, but not any that I could see). I scored, gained merits and lived in accordance with a life charted out by elders, not knowing if that was the best. It did world of good, but independent thinking had a long way to get built.

Come to this era - I recently met some relatives and their kids. they enjoy their lives playing video games, solving board games and running around. When it comes to instilling some values or habits or discipline or in case of kids growing abroad, when it comes to teaching them culture, question "WHY" pops up. I ll never blame these innocent kids. They have all rights to know and it's our responsibility to enlighten then as much as possible. At this age ( early twenties ), i love watching shows like 'How it's made", " Planet Earth", " Wired Science", NGEO and DSC shows. It's simply delightful to see the mystery solved. The way our body works, the way sumo wrestlers build muscles, the way internet and related things work, the way companies make money, the way wine is made, plastic is made, paper is created and what not. Like many other women, when it appears too complex to me, i switch channels...hehe...But fortunately these shows are tailored for uninformed laymen viewers. For mechanisms inside our body or machines , they show animations, which makes them good food for the brain.

In this context I would also like to mention about this movie called 'Taare Zameen Par'. A classic example of how education puts boundaries to a free flowing creative thought process in kids. A very successful Forbes Billionaire pointed out the same thing ' I had no boundaries to think, as I had no education'.

Education should aim towards satisfying this scientific temper ( The hows and whys of life) and equipping people with some life skills ( for example say conflict management, money management etc). Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't. A school bag as heavy as the kid itself doesn't translate to knowledge or actual wisdom. Truckload of homework for sure keeps the kid away from school. Some cope well, most do not. Their originality gets stifled. They grow into adults with the same old questions about life they always had, with thousand different answers having confused them, with opinions still pouring in and we have adults who do not know why they are here, what they were meant for, what are they best at, what interests them most. Many live a follow the herd life, with never having done what they always wanted to. There is a brighter side to this picture with advent of internet, with free flow of thoughts and greater freedom, but the same old factors like competition, money and risks prevent us from having a fuller or bigger life and they have us "chasing mode" forever either to please someone or to make money ( out of need or greed) or being simply lethargic to follow our dreams.

The other side of the picture says, what if you do not make it to what you believed you could ? What will happen if all the other kids who started with you have settled and you have dedicated so many years behind this one thing you believed you could and you haven't done anything yet ? Who si ready to place belief in you, invest hard earned money in your eccentric dreams ? Sometime it s our own inherent motivation which decreases due to some external factors. But there is one thing that is true, "Whether you believe you can or cannot, you are right"...

When the mind thinks it cannot do it, it finds out all supporting reasons to reason out why it ll go wrong to tell itself and to others.

When the mind believes it can, it ll find out ways to do it hook or crook. new possibilities are born, new people are born, new ideas arrive. As we all know e-businesses thrive on the time they lock with the users. The more the time you are ona particular site or the more you use it, the more the money that goes into the pockets of these businesses.
Now it's eerie sometimes. Yahoo or Google knows where I stay, what I do, what are my needs, what do I look for when I am on the internet and what is my objective, my likes and dislikes.
The adaptive technology brings on palette links suited to my unique personalized choices. It's like even before I google and find out stuff on internet, the links are there appearing on the top of my gmail page. Isnt that a breach of privacy. I know it s an automatic system, that looks for some repeated words in my mails and gives me back the search results, and it feels great to find exactly what you want, but it doesnt feel too great that someone knows every single thing about you, probably more than you know yourself. Probably this is what they called Agressive marketing.

Initailly it kept me wondering that in Facebook or other forum like sites, these ads are never clicked. I mean our eyes are tuned to just rip off the necessary content in the site.
But as I write this post, I realize that they have refined over a period of time. Now I find myself clicking on those gmail links more often. Now I understand that it's because they knows me better than before to give me exactly what I want, 90% of the time.

E-bay or other advertisement sites work on the same foundation. They read the customer, rip you off. But now e-bay has come with a feature, which allows you to offset the profile settings, which means you ll be a fresh customer each time you visit the site...

More on this here : Who's afraid of Google Shrividyahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08520929853783981943noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8036433478105578893.post-23838312736294924852007-11-01T13:58:00.000-05:002007-11-02T11:17:42.681-05:00The side of Marketing I hateIn a recent conversation with a friend, we discussed how marketing is seen by some people as salesman kind of work. That's myopic...

There are numerous theories and statistics and a great depth in what we call marketing. In the crudest sense it appears to me as 'the art of attraction'. What would be the percentage of cases when we buy what we don't need ? How many people get confused between need and desire ? How smart are those marketing professionals in convincing that you really really need it to be complete or satiated !

Coming back to the topic,'marketing' at a small scale for small business which is not so organized, makes me distrust the intentions of people. It's like' Is this why he/she being so close and concerned'. The best examples would be Quickstar and Amway products. I feel they make false promises pulling people into business and makes others move away from these people. Sometimes 'marketing' becomes a mantra for them. In the process of promoting they change themselves, lie through their teeth and sometimes believe in 'what they sell' like they would belive their religion.

They try to seduce every family member, some turn into bakras and buy and obviously realize it was never worth the money.
I am definitely for these small business and their efforts to grow. As long as you don't propagate false philosophy/ideology it's fine. If you truly believe in the product or service you offer and see potential for it ( in terms of need or atleast desire) , still respect the space people have. Don't go persuading to the extent, that people avoid you. You haven't gained much, but have lost a lot.

Yet another thing practiced here in US is build public relationships. And I get extra cynical when this friendship building is way too fast against natural speed. People greet each other her and start talking especially if they belong to the same country or clan, so one often gets confused, so fast relationship building happens even in absence of marketing, which is what makes me distrust even genuine people. Some background check helps, if that s possible.

So next time someone says ' Our wavelengths match, don't they', be doubly sure, especially when you have know this person for less than an year.

I would really love to see myself promoting my business, for I still need to master the art, but I would call it ' answering people why would they need it and what are the shortcomings as well'. The objective would be "to genuinely make life easier and better" and 'money' shall be a by product. As they always say 'it ll be a special communion of necessity and my imagination', certainly not a false necessity. Time shall stand testimony...Shrividyahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08520929853783981943noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8036433478105578893.post-49946125490041597192007-10-16T13:35:00.001-05:002007-10-16T13:50:14.764-05:00Skimmed Milk and moreIt's a country where every thing has a low fat substitute, healthy or unhealthy the food item is low in fat, tasty or unbearable it's "fat free" slogan sells it in a big way. Although these products appear as an obvious choice to weight watchers, sometimes they psych us out.
Back in India, I will start a protest for adulterated milk or watered milk. Here,I pay for it, knowing that it s 70% water.
Looking at the food label has become a norm. The first thing is the saturated fat content ! Thanks to these labels that we make informed choices, but ironically when we go back home our friends and relatives find a plump version of us. The only key seems to lose weight or even maintain weight seems to eat what a cow or goat eats. Yes, I write that out of frustration, which comes even before dieting. A healthy and tasty food seems to be a dream. Although there are a couple of them which satisfy these criteria, u cannot eat them on a continuous basis. Besides, it s the women of our age who food attacks first . I end it with a positive note, that there is light at the end of the tunnel, but it's at the "end".Shrividyahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08520929853783981943noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8036433478105578893.post-35566429278171762582007-10-16T13:33:00.000-05:002007-10-16T13:34:33.749-05:00A written goal ?In a Harvard class (not a bad school - everyone on relatively equal footing at a university of that level, so a good
test case) - the numbers are rounded - 83% of people said that they had no defined goals. 13% said they have
goals, but didn't write them down. Remaining 3-4% had goals and wrote them down.

Here's the kicker - the 83% were the baseline - average. The 13% who had goals but didn't write them down made
twice as much money than the 83%. And the 3-4%, they made twice as much money as the 13%.Shrividyahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08520929853783981943noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8036433478105578893.post-20207399222162008462007-10-07T19:55:00.000-05:002007-10-07T20:39:36.454-05:00The week that wasIt's not restricted to movies now, I watch some really nice serials in the afternoon as well...They cheer me up during that gloomy, hot, dull and not-so-happening part of the day... With a cup of tea and few biscuits, it's complete. The shows are 'What I like about you' by Amanda Byrnes... I constantly get reminded of a friend of mine on seeing this character. She is on my buddies list.

Next is 'Reba'. She s a 52 year old pop singer, a multi-faced personality and appears this comedy show of hers. She plays a role of single-mother staying with a big family including her husband's new wife, next door.

These comedy shows portray human foibless in a hilarious way...During the nights it's 'Everybody Love's Raymond'

As for movies, I got to watch 'Before Sunrise' and 'Before Sunset', on recommendation by a friend. Romantic genre!

I prefer the first to second, for it's freshness and sensibility.. The whole movie runs with just two people talking, talking and talking. What makes the movie nice ? The dialogue was natural and something most of us think but few express. The term "sociological experiment" in first movie, is not something many would try. Putting 'love' under a test was reasonable.

Here are some of the quotes from the first part : Before Sunrise
The second one, which I had watched more recently, it was the waltz that Celine sings for Jesse which I found awesome. As for the rest of the movie, the discussion is about world, it's problems etc, for which I wasnt impressed for some reason. Also I found Jesse's renewed attraction common in life of many men. Not tht I am so old or wise, but I felt nothing new or fresh about it. It s a natural reaction to have such fantasies and tending to make them true.
Apart from that, the movie had a smooth flow, with the two of them reconnoitering their experiences in past 9 years..With traces of indian conservative mindset, not many can enjoy the second part. The first was best...

Here is what 'Reflection' played this weekend. Mouna RagamShrividyahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08520929853783981943noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8036433478105578893.post-75329805882955723952007-10-01T11:38:00.000-05:002007-10-07T19:54:59.506-05:00Houston ZooThe zoo at Houston, makes up for the absence of other weekend hangouts in the city, for people like me, who don't find pubs so interesting.

The weather on Saturday was welcoming and we got a forest like experience even in the zoo, which is located in the downtown.
Although India has a rich habitat and numerous zoos, the maintanance of animals there is pathetic and after having seen such zoos at India, this was truly a feast to the eyes...The cloudy weather made it all the more enjoyable.

This one was so cute. Here is a simple post on what they are and why they are good. Also I have found a couple of sources.

Fats are of three types.
1. Saturated ( Single bond between carbon and hydrogen atoms)
2. Mono unsaturated ( one double bond)
3. Poly unsaturated ( 2 double bonds)

Fats are the ones which provide more calories compared to Proteins or Carbs. And we need fats for energy buiding fight diseases etc.
To make things simple, Saturated ( Or anything tht contains the name Partially Hydrogenated oil) is bad for health in all forms.

So one has to replace it with Mono and Poly Unsaturated fats. The latter (poly ) is not produced by body. Omega 3 Fatty acids have them. Omega 3 acids prevent a whole lot of other diseases too. They lower cholestrol, fight stress in a big way, control depression, reduce chances of heart disorder, prevent certain types of cancer, fight inflammation and irritable bowels, prevent Arthritis Osteoporosis etc.
Among cookign oils canola oil is good source of mono and poly unsaturated fats. It has less or no saturated fat.
Flaxseeds or Flaxseed oil, Codliver tablets are big source of Omega 3 Fatty acids.

Source - This carries some reseraches supporting the theory
Also read the word of caution printed here. What I have written is a jist of the matter and also something from Oprah Winfrey s show I saw today..

Some more gyan - A blind way of keeping things on check is that eat food low in sugar, low in salt, high in fibre, high in calcium and proteins and exercise regularly. Oatmeals and cereals have high amount of vitamins we need for our body.

It s small incremental values which keep u healthy. A habit which gets built over time. The older self will thank you. It s exactly in the same manner as, junk food slowly kills you.

In the end I would like to quote what my cosuin's gradpa always says ' the lifetime of a man is not the number of days he lived, it s the number of days he has been healthy and happy'

Ciao
Till next postShrividyahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08520929853783981943noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8036433478105578893.post-27883746074652536212007-09-17T14:08:00.001-05:002007-09-17T14:15:46.761-05:00Blood DiamondIt was not a great idea to watch this movie :-(..Although I enjoyed watching it, I have been getting dreams of getting big diamond stones from some unknown treasury.
And this dream is repeating itself. :-( :-(

Gory the movie was in some scenes. Here are somethings u might want to read abt blood diamonds. Fell in love with this song when I was 13. Searched for the song everywhere and gave up...

Here is it for fellow lovers
http://youtube.com/watch?v=wgJSyvw7fSsShrividyahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08520929853783981943noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8036433478105578893.post-63258051567096058722007-09-09T18:24:00.000-05:002007-09-09T18:31:29.544-05:00Movies this weekendI have become a movie buff !!!!
3 movies straight this weekend.

1. Dhamaal. Hindi - Comedy. Dont expect to bring any memories out of theatre. 3 hours of very good timepass. Javed jaffry is funny.

2. Rush Hour 2 . Have seen others. Waiting for 4. hehe . How about location in India ? I think the director should consider this.

3. The beautiful mind. I feel my writing capability / vocabulary will be too less to describe this movie. That I call is life. I have never seen such a simple and sensible movie. Impeccably taken. Probably would watch it again..

hmmmm. Have ordered a couple of more movies for subsequent weekends.Shrividyahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08520929853783981943noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8036433478105578893.post-59882548592331781842007-09-09T18:21:00.000-05:002007-09-09T18:36:03.762-05:00Reading Speed ?Have you ever wondered what your reading speed is ? Here is a site, which quickly and easily calculates it. Don't ask me about the accuracy of the reading. Maybe you should cross check it.

http://gandalf.psych.umn.edu/~gellab/MNREAD/DEMO_RS/Shrividyahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08520929853783981943noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8036433478105578893.post-86598146266883333582007-09-04T10:07:00.000-05:002007-09-04T10:18:56.480-05:00Part -3The sequel movies are great to watch, especially when you are promised an unlimited entertainment.
Unfortunately, I always watch them in the sequence 1,3 and 2. Bourne series and Rush hour fall in this category. Since there is a huge time gap between the parts 1 and 3, I am really really disappointed to see the bloated versions of actors. Chris tucker did not look like himself. And Matt Damon was brawny loses his charm in ultimatum. ( Opinions here are my own)
Nevertheless the movies were great entertainers for the weekend. I have gotten the slang 'what s up maaann' from chris in rush hour. He continues to be funny.
Another movie I watched recently and liked was 'Devil wears prada'. I feel it shud be remade in Hindi. The movie is just about arrogant and demanding bosses, but it seemed so natural and Meryl Streep is just AWESOME.
Planning to watch some more movies in the coming days. Suggestions are welcome.Drama, Romance, Comedy, Fictions and lil action movies preferred :-)Shrividyahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08520929853783981943noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8036433478105578893.post-48427128236277548982007-08-16T14:20:00.000-05:002007-08-16T14:38:31.197-05:00Google ka chamatkarThe news will spread faster than this post of mine.

Google continues to surprise and delight it's users with it's new iGoogle feature. I found it 3 days back and I am a little too excited about this.

I open my browser and and on the tray I have, latest news, fitness tips, finance tips, quotes, new words for the day to help me in vocabulary building and what not. Some kind of ' Karlo Duniya Mutti me'. The various gadgets/ features can be moved anywhere in the window and made suit you style. And to give you a personal feel, you can select theme and the theme will change depending on if it s day or night at your place. The rest I think I should leave for the readers to experience on their own, hence better left unsaid.

I recently read a book by C.K.Prahlad, named ' Future Of Competetion'. The author talks about a UNIQUE PERSONALIZED EXPERIENCE, which means the kind of experience I will get by using the product, is going to be entirely different in terms of time, age, place, situation. So all the products I use, if they want to satisfy/delight me, should be tailored completely to my tastes and preferences. The book talks at length about achieving the same through various strategies...The value creation of any object has to be CENTERED around me.

Unfortunately i am not able to show how the igoogle setting looks on my browser. But I am sure, you ll be in for surprises :-)

Meanwhile I also read something about Linear growth. Infy/ Wipros or TCSs have this kind of growth where greater the number of people, greater are the revenues. So the profit the company makes is so inextricably connected to the headcount. But here we are talking about a company, which has less than 3000 employees and is a part of our daily lives. It has won hearts and will continue to.Shrividyahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08520929853783981943noreply@blogger.com2
